For example, Boreal Valley Vordt can be crafted into either a Great Hammer (amazingly slow, but does huge damage) or a ring called the Pontiff's Left Eye (which starts healing you if you land lots of blow quickly - making it essential for fast dual wielders including those using the Brigand Twinblades). Most boss souls have three crafting options, but not all of them are always shown, and they're not always worth making. (He's the tiny withered figure on the left-hand throne.) Once you've given him the kiln, you can talk to him and he'll give you options as to which item he can make. As well as dropping a soul, he also drops a Transposing Kiln, which can be used by Ludleth of Courland in the Firelink Shrine.
Instead, go and kill the optional boss, the Curse-Rotted Greatwood.
Yet these early bosses really aren't worth cashing in, given that they only give you two or three thousand souls apiece. When you've killed one of the early bosses - like Boreal Valley Vordt or The Crystal Sage - it's tempting to cash in their soul for a large immediate soul bonus. There's also a way to drop down from the walkway to the roof, where you can meet a Crow who's happy to trade items. It costs 20,000 souls to get into though, so it might be worth waiting to get up there. This is to the Firelink Shrine tower, which contains some goodies including a Fire Keeper's Soul, and another set of armour. On the right hand side of the interior, there's another staircase that leads outside. He drops the katana, and the Master's armour - which is basically rags. It's worth noting that thanks to the game's slightly shonky spawning / pathfinding in some playthroughs, he can fall off the edge before you even get there, allowing you to collect his gear. He's carrying a katana, which is quite lethal, but his lack of armour means he's easy to kill - if you can get a blow in. On the left hand side, from the entrance, there's a staircase leading to a dead end, where an almost naked samurai is waiting. More NPCs can be found in the world (especially around the Undead Settlement) who sell or give more strange items. Inside, there are a blacksmith, Shrine Handmaiden and Fire Keeper, who offer upgrades, item sales, and level up as well. The Firelink Shrine has absorbed the old Nexus as well as any extraneous buildings, so it's worth having a look around the place.
